Twitter Terrace

Architectural photography in New York - Rooftop Terrace

Architectural photography in New York is not always about buildings. Sometimes it’s a cool rooftop terrace like this one built for Twitter by my client Richter and Ratner.

For this project, the client wanted the space photographed at night and during the day as it will be used at all different times of the day. It was December, and not only was I cold as hell shooting this project, but all the shrubs were brown and brittle and looked terrible. I brought back the green later using Photoshop.

I shot at dusk for the night shots so there would still be some detail in the sky. I wasn’t happy with what I was getting from the ambient light in the design and the little bit of light left from dusk. I brought in strobe lights to fill in the shadows and compliment the lighting that was already there. It was also helpful in separating the subject from the sky in the background.

These types of subject matter and lighting setups are what I love shooting Architectural photography in New York.

Twitter will use this terrace for all kinds of events, from conferences to social gatherings and a whole bunch more I can’t even think of.

Photographing architecture in New York is always interesting and the list of subject matter is endless. Its a big part of why I live here and an equally big part of why I work in this genre of photography.
